Bluebird and the Dead Lake (1965)

Bluebird and the Dead Lake (1965)

In 1964, on the saltpan of Lake Eyre, Donald Campbell set out to drive his Bluebird car at over 400mph - faster than any man in history. Things had been going wrong from the start: unseasonal rains, low funds...even an Aboriginal curse. With death shimmering on the horizon before him, Campbell tried to hold his nerve until he broke the record.

First published: 1965 (Collins)

FUN FACT: An outbreak of chickenpox amongst John's children back in London and  John's wife demanding his return very nearly put an end to this project - luckily Campbell intervened, calmed her down and stopped a recall to London!
